Get Started on Your Online Microbiology Course

This microbiology online course  is designed to meet the requirements of students interested in careers in allied health and nursing. Microbiology for Health Professions is a one semester course that emphasizes the interaction of microorganisms with humans and the diseases they cause. The primary focus of the course is the role of microbes in disease. Topics include nosocomial infections, microbial pathogens, virulence factors and pathogenicity, antibiotic resistance, the immune system, epidemiology, and practical means of controlling the spread of disease. Critical thinking and analysis is emphasized throughout the course. Allied health students completing this course will understand the disease-causing mechanisms of a representative group of pathogenic microorganisms, how these microbes are transmitted and the relevant control techniques, as well as how the body defends itself from pathogen invasion.

Note: For successful completion of this microbiology online course, it is recommended that students are familiar with Biology I and II or their equivalents.

Our Microbiology online course is a great addition to degree programs that are already underway. Students may also take this course to complete a different degree program not affiliated with Doane University. Doane's Open Learning Courses are not a part of any degree program at Doane University. If you are interested in starting a degree program at Doane, please visit our website at www.doane.edu.

Courses Include

  • illustration of a person talking. Lectures
  • illustration of a beaker. Labs
Labs fall into three categories: at-home labs, laboratory kits and virtual labs. At-home labs use commonly found household items or things that can easily be purchased and come with a set of instructions on how to complete the lab. Laboratory kits are used in this course and are very similar to at home-labs - items and directions required to complete the lab are sent directly to you via the purchase of a lab kit. Virtual labs are also used in this course and use designed simulations which walk you through any experiment and will ask you lab-related questions. Hands-on labs may require a video of you performing the lab and/or a completed lab report.
