As Doane students embark on their academic journey, navigating this school year can be both exhilarating and overwhelming. We reached out to a well-known face and resource on the Crete campus to provide advice. Jeremy Caldwell, Director of the Writing Center at Doane, has helped numerous Tigers grow academically and personally, as writers and students.
Whether you’re grappling with time management or struggling to start that paper, Caldwell shared words of wisdom on striking balance among classes, activities and friends and "breaking down the task of reading."
"When you start, read only one paragraph at a time," Caldwell said. "Stop. Then put the information in your own words. Move to the second paragraph, repeat; now fold into the paraphrased first paragraph. The purpose is to avoid 'false starts' when your mind starts to wander but you continue to 'read.' This strategy helps you to move forward; this might be slower, but in the long run actually saves time.”
Caldwell also shared his advice on getting involved with campus organizations and activities. “The benefits are numerous: networking, skill development, career prep, and leadership opportunities; but it all boils down to building community and fostering a sense of belonging here at Doane.”
