In the instructional design & technology (IDT) program, students dive into a rich mix of ideas and perspectives to address diverse learning needs and real-world challenges within business and education. They'll engage with a community of learners coming from business, education, healthcare, sports sciences, and more, to explore how instructional design intersects with and informs various fields.
Students will find themselves in a dynamic learning environment where the broad range of perspectives and experiences enrich every discussion. This exposure helps them think creatively and develop innovative solutions for different learning needs that are effective across multiple contexts. One IDT student drew on these opportunities to redesign an under-staffed school system’s music program and increased curriculum consistency across school sites. Another student designed and implemented a multifaceted leadership development program for a retail business chain to increase opportunities for leaders seeking to advance in their careers.
Our IDT program emphasizes the interconnectedness of disciplines to create human-centered learning and development experiences. IDT highlights the integration of design, technology, pedagogy/andragogy, data analytics, accessibility, and design thinking, showing how different disciplines come together.
Students will see how instructional design connects to diverse industries, preparing them to collaborate effectively in diverse professional environments. We focus on how IDT principles apply broadly, helping students build bridges between different domains and work seamlessly across sectors. As one example, an IDT student collaborated with learners from different disciplines to redesign a middle school library to improve traffic flow, make resources more relevant and accessible to students, and encourage both student and instructor engagement and collaboration.
Learners in IDT gain hands-on experience designing accessible, inclusive and innovative learning solutions. Our program prepares students to solve real-world problems by applying instructional design strategies that meet the needs of a rapidly evolving world. Whether it's to create global training programs or gain skills in working with digital learning tools for the classroom, our program offers a variety of hands-on learning experiences.
One IDT student collaborated with a local non-profit to create an LMS-based learning program to support immigrant women with their small business ownership goals and the development of English language proficiency.
