The Social Emotional Learning Specialist will be a knowledgeable practitioner in the neuroscience and process, through which children and adults understand and manage emotions, set and achieve positive goals, feel and show compassion and empathy for others, establish and maintain positive relationships and make responsible decisions. Being skilled in empowering students with social and emotional learning competencies will bring clarity to learning.
Our social-emotional learning for teachers program is designed for those currently certified to teach but is open to counselors, administrators and anyone working in the education field. Candidates must have a bachelor's degree with a minimum of 3.0 GPA.
Please note:
- This specialization does not qualify for an endorsement with the NDE or Iowa Department of Education.
- Students have the option of taking this specialization with our Curriculum and Instruction Degree, or as a Non-Degree seeking student.
Courses
Special Programs
Degree Seeking Student
Fifteen credit hours are required for this specialization. These courses will count towards a Masters of Education in Curriculum & Instruction degree.
Non-Degree Seeking Student
The non-degree seeking category consists of students who do not wish to pursue a graduate degree at Doane University, but want to take graduate courses.
Although there is no limit on the amount of credit that may be earned, if a non-degree-seeking student later wishes to pursue the Master of Education degree at Doane University, no more than 12 credits earned while in the non-degree status may be applied toward the graduate degree.
If a student feels there are extenuating circumstances, the student may petition the Graduate Committee of the Whole to accept more than 12 hours completed as a non-degree-seeking student.
A student who has taken coursework as a non-degree-seeking student and who later wishes to be admitted into a degree program must complete all requirements for full admission and all program requirements currently in effect, instead of those in effect when the coursework began.
