Over 150 students crossed the stage at Doane University’s winter commencement ceremony on Saturday, December 14. The ceremony began at 1 p.m. for students receiving undergraduate degrees from the university’s Crete campus and graduate degrees who attended the Lincoln campus. The ceremony was held inside the university’s Fuhrer Fieldhouse in Crete.
Doane President Dr. Roger Hughes, a 1982 graduate of the university, handed degrees to students who walked in the ceremonies to the cheers and celebration of their family and peers.
The main commencement speech was given by Dr. Rev. Jessie L. Myles. In 1988, Myles was hired as the Multicultural/Urban Education Project Director for the Nebraska Department of Education, Equal Opportunity Education Program, retiring in 2008. After that, he was hired as the Coordinator of Diversity and At-Risk Programs for the Midwest Equity Center at Kansas State University. At the same time, for several years, he was a part-time employee at Doane University as a Counselor in the Academic Support Center.
During Myles’s speech, “When You Believe You Can, You Can,” he encouraged students to foster inclusivity, build community, embrace their big goals without hesitation, and use their education to make a positive impact.
