Doane University proudly celebrates the induction of Kathy Ohlman, assistant professor of practice, into the Nebraska Music Educators Association (NMEA) Hall of Fame, a prestigious recognition for her decades of dedication, innovation, and leadership in music education.

Kathy Ohlman is a master teacher, exemplary musician, and tireless advocate for the transformative power of music education. Her career spans K-12 classrooms and collegiate instruction, touching countless lives through her teaching, advocacy, and mentorship. At every step, Kathy has made an indelible impact, fostering not only musical excellence but also a profound sense of independence and purpose in her students. Her former students, many of whom performed at regional and state levels, were equipped to sight-read, select repertoire, and perform at an extraordinary standard.

Since joining Doane University, Kathy has shared her expertise and passion with future educators. She holds her students to the highest expectations, ensuring they enter the field as confident, informed, and impactful teachers. Kathy emphasizes advocacy, empowering pre-service teachers to confidently engage with legislators to champion arts education. Her efforts culminated in events like Nebraska Collegiate Hill Day and trips to the NAfME National Assembly, where Doane students shared their stories with lawmakers.

Beyond teaching, Kathy has spent years shaping the future of music education in Nebraska. As NMEA’s advocacy chair, she built lasting relationships with legislators and penned detailed, informative updates for educators. Recently, she has been instrumental in establishing an NMEA Foundation, which aims to support teachers and students pursuing their dreams in music education.
